PRODUCTION INFORMATION

“Thrilling, expansive, world-changing… A terrific, gutsy new comedy!"

- The New York Times -

The Amateurs, is a witty tragicomedy from Pulitzer finalist, Jordan Harrison.

A hilarious and moving exploration of mortality and the emergence of humanism. Harrison’s wildly inventive play asks when does a crisis destroy us, and when does it open new possibilities?

“We’re actors. They bury us outside the city walls. And that’s if they like us.”

A troupe of mismatched mediaeval players make their way across Europe, desperate to outrun the Plague. They’re hoping to impress His Highness, the Duke, with their morality plays, and thereby gain salvation within the walls of his city.

The roles are cast, and time is running out, when the arrival of a mysterious stranger drives the actress, Hollis, to seek a truth beyond the holy scripture.

This Australian Premiere at Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre draws fascinating parallels between a mediaeval humanitarian disaster, and a more recent epidemic. The Amateurs is a highly theatrical and hysterical take on both religion and the Age of Enlightenment.
