PRODUCTION INFORMATION

In a world that has become increasingly ‘post-truth’, Obie Award winning playwright, Christopher Chen, weaves an intricate exploration of art, social justice, and cultural appropriation with his ‘puzzle box of a play’, Caught.

“Why did they lie? Because a lie is a new home. A place of return after long and lonely journeys in the dark.”

An art gallery hosts a retrospective of a legendary Chinese dissident who has been imprisoned in a state detention centre for two years. The artist, recently profiled in the New Yorker, shares details of a terrifying ordeal that almost defies belief.

Caught is an irreverent and exhilarating examination of power and our relationship to the truth. The Australian premiere at Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre is directed by acclaimed theatre-maker, Jean Tong (Hungry Ghosts) and features Jing-Xuan Chan (Incognito), Jessica Clarke (Iphigenia in Splott), Louis Le (God in the Sky) and David Whiteley (Ulster American).

Set and costume design by Silvia Shao, lighting design by Lisa Mibus, sound design by Edwin Cheah, and composition by James Gales.

"An intricately constructed, unrelentingly destabilising puzzle of a play about the anatomy of truth and the provocative power of illusion!”
