Join us for the Victorian Premiere of This Year’s Ashes
By Jane Bodie
A very big thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday for our fundraiser PLAYlist at donkey wheel house. It was a truly memorable night, and we can’t wait to bring you more special experiences like this in the future. The demand for PLAYlist was extraordinary, selling out well in advance, and we were overwhelmed by your excitement and enthusiasm. We are very grateful to everyone who made this special night possible including: the wonderful staff at donkey wheel house/kinfolk cafe, Jamsheed Wines for their very charitable donation, and all the artists and volunteers for making it such a spectacular event. The astounding generosity of time and talent helped us to raise much-needed funds for artist pay at Red Stitch.
This Year’s Ashes by Jane Bodie, one of the country’s leading playwrights, is a wonderful blend of humour and pathos, not to mention a great opportunity to have a cheeky giggle at everything we love about Sydney! The play lends itself beautifully to the intimacy of Red Stitch, and it’s a delight to have long-term ensemble member Daniel Frederiksen back on our stage, starring alongside Rosie Lockhart and special guest Jeremy Stanford.
See you at the theatre,
“This city has rules. And if you can’t work them out then you’re lost.
Because it’s hard and fast and shiny here, and it’s lonely.”
Ellen’s moved from Melbourne in pursuit of a new life in shiny Sydney. Stuck in an office job she hates, she has no friends and speaks to no one back home. Ellen prefers the company of strangers – drinking with them, sleeping with them and ideally never seeing them again. But now it seems that whatever she’s trying to leave behind her is refusing to let go, and the anonymous guy she’s brought home might not be so anonymous after all.
This Year’s Ashes had an enormously successful premiere season at Griffin Theatre Company, Sydney in 2011. This hilarious, touching, bittersweet comedy is about relationships and loss. Of moving and moving on. And…the cricket.
Directed by Tim Roseman, Artistic Director Playwriting Australia, This Year’s Ashesfeatures Daniel Frederiksen, Rosie Lockhart and special guest actor Jeremy Stanford. Set & Costume Design is by Kat Chan, with Lighting Design by Hartley T A Kemp and Sound Design & Composition by Russell Goldsmith and Daniel Nixon.
