TOP TEN PLAYS OF 2013 – THE GUARDIAN AND THE LONDON EVENING STANDARD
Don’t miss this play! Grounded is one of those scripts you read that you can’t let go of, and it won’t let go of you. It is potent and urgent, and we are proud to bring it to Melbourne audiences with such an incredible creative team. I urge you to see Grounded for what will be a truly astonishing performance by an exceptional actor. Kate Cole is a dear friend, yes, but it’s not my bias talking. She is brilliant! Do come and see this wonderful play and performance for yourselves.
Speaking of good things, it’s been a fantastic few weeks for our Red Stitch Writers. Chris Summers has won this year’s prestigious Patrick White Playwrights’ Award, Glyn Roberts is shortlisted for the 2014 Griffin Award, Nicki Bloom is in rehearsal for her play Little Bird at TCSA/Adelaide Festival (Little Bird will also be playing a limited run with our friends at GPAC in July), and Dan Giovannoni is writing his way around Europe, having just finished a new draft of Jurassica from an apartment in Berlin where he was attending the Theatre Treffen Festival!
We are absolutely chuffed to be working on new plays with this talented group of writers. In fact, rehearsals are underway for Glyn’s Red Stitch Writers piece, The Flock and the Nest, which premieres in July, featuring Red Stitch actors and special guests alongside students from St Michael’s Grammar School at their home just down the road from us.
We have a lot to be excited about lately, and there is more to come so stay tuned…
We look forward to seeing you at the theatre,
She’s an F16 fighter pilot; a rock star of the great big blue above. She loves the sky. And suddenly she is pregnant.
Her career in the sky is over. Now, she sits in an air-conditioned trailer in Las Vegas flying remote-controlled drones. Maybe it’s safer this way; maybe it’s better? She can come home to her husband and child. As the pressure to track a high-profile target mounts, the boundaries begin to blur between the desert in which she lives and the one she patrols.
From the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workday existence, Grounded is a visceral, gripping story that flies through one woman’s internal war and her external battle. It tackles our assumptions about surveillance, the ambiguities of warfare in the 21st century, duty and the complexities of family life.
Grounded, directed by Kirsten von Bibra (Three Sisters, The Perjured City – VCA) features founding Ensemble member Kate Cole as The Pilot. Jillian Baldwin Britton joins us again as Stage Manager (The Kitchen Sink 2014 Regional Tour and ROAM). We welcome our very special guests Matthew Adey (Set & Lighting Design), Elizabeth Drake (Sound Design) and Elizabeth Nabben (Assistant Director) for their Red Stitch debuts.
“★★★★★ …a beautiful, necessary and perfectly-structured solo drama.” – The Scotsman.
“Grounded is a smart, beautiful bit of writing…Spunky and funny, Brant’s script is completely absorbing and hard to forget.” – Time Out London.
